German designer Karl Lagerfeld moved to Paris in the early 1950s to begin his career with industry legend Pierre Balmain. Lagerfeld entered a competition hosted by Balmain and placed second in the contest. His entry was subsequently put into production as a result of his ingenuity. By 1958, at only 20 years old, Lagerfeld left to take a job working for Jean Patou who groomed him for a year before he decided to transition to freelance.
