Born in Philadelphia in 1924, the third child and only son of Greek immigrants, James Galann is considered one of the few American designers to rival the exquisite finish and craftsmanship of the great French couturiers.

Following several false starts as a fashion designer in New York, and an apprenticeship in Paris, he designed and launched a line of ready-to-wear dresses in Los Angeles with the support and encouragement of his former employer, Columbia Pictures' head designer Jean Louis. Among Galann's devoted customer base was former first lady Nancy Reagan, who favored the detail and quality of his designs for special occasions, including four inaugural balls.
