Coty was founded in 1904 by Francois Coty in Paris, France. After studying perfumery with a pharmacist, he launched his first perfume, to immediate success. He became known for crafting and marketing fragrances, using attractive bottles in beautiful packaging. The perfumer also began marketing perfume, which had been primarily available to the wealthy, to middle and working class women, launching mass market products. When the brand was sold to Pfizer in 1963, its products were sold primarily in drugstores and mass retailers. After its acquisition by Joh. A. Benckiser GmbH in 1992, the brand has shifted back to upscale fragrances.
