The multi-talented Serge Lutens was born in Lille, France in 1942. He has worked as a filmmaker, photographer, hair stylist, fashion designer, and perfumer. He began his career as an apprentice in a hair salon. In the early 1960s, he was hired by Vogue magazine to design hair, makeup, and jewelry for photo shoots. He then went on to create a cosmetics line for Christian Dior before developing his own fragrances.
