Originally known as Kenneth Cole Inc., the company started in men’s shoes and was named for New York native and designer. After struggling to find a showroom space to debut the line of shoes, the company applied for and was granted a film company permit to film a documentary of its own launch. Changing its name to Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc., the company’s launch and documentary was a success, propelling it forward and allowing expansion into women’s fashion and an eventual fragrance collaboration with Coty.
