When Italian-born Johann Maria Farina immigrated to Cologne, Germany in the 1700s, he created a fragrance that he named for his new home: Eau de Cologne ("water from Cologne"). Legend has it that he gifted his scent as a wedding present to Wilhelm Mülhens, who lived at house number 4711 and went on to found one of the most prominent perfume houses in the world.
