Founded in France by Etienne de Swardt, Etat Libre d'Orange (Free State of Orange) has become known for its brave and daring perfume combinations. Swardt, a South African, moved to Paris where he worked for the perfume house Givenchy. In 2006 he decided to break with the traditional perfume industry and launched his own brand to celebrate sexuality and eroticism with scent.
